Let's use this space for questions AND ideas on your projects.

  1. I feel like the SIOP video is more of a sales pitch than a worthwhile description of what it means to implement SIOP in schools. I read the article, too, but it's still fuzzy. Can anyone clarify a bit?

  2. Hi guys,

I decided to start collecting information for my final project with a survey. It would help me out if you would be willing to take it! I've adapted a few questions just for you. Have fun!

  3. Try googling SIOP videos and maybe you get better ones. The short descriptions on Quia should also work...

  4. Nelson,

I do not feel at all prepared to implement a lesson for English Language Learners under these circumstances. I have some very large concerns.

1- We have done a lot of readings - good ones. Still, after less than two weeks, reading about SIOP and SDAIE does not make us qualified to tackle this in a strange environment.

2- It is extremely intrusive. These teachers are kind enough to allow us to observe them for five class periods. In many cases, we have never met these teachers, and we certainly have no idea what is going on in their curriculum or what the particular needs of the children might be. I firmly believe that it is overstepping our boundaries to ask them to hand over the reigns to a student teacher they've just met. They don't know our strengths and they don't know our qualifications. Things are different when we have 12-week-long student teaching placements, but five observation periods is hardly enough to warrant this kind of control.

3- I am not comfortable with recording students I do not know. It will be very difficult to obtain written parental permission from students. Even in a typical classroom setting, getting parents and children to return forms to school is an arduous task.

I am very interested to hear what my classmates think about this. Is it possible that you'd be willing to assign an alternate and comparable assignment in place of the YouTube lesson plan?

  5. Hey Michaela, I agree with you. I talked to my placement teacher and she was not comfortable with this idea either. I also was not comfortable with it when I learned about it. You make great points and I couldn't agree with them more. I don't know if this would be possible, but maybe we could come up with a lesson plan and post it? Or share some of the lessons we saw in our observations? I did my observations yesterday and the teacher was fantastic!! She spent 6-8 weeks on one unit, and went really in depth.

  6. Sarah, Michaela: I am in consultation with other SOE professors and will give you an update shortly.

  7. I know this is short notice now, but I'm sure more people could come teach a lesson in the class Jodi and I are observing. The teacher has been great, and she said it gives adult learners a great opportunity to hear different native speakers teach them...just an idea. The only problem is they don't have classes on Friday, or this Monday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day). It is quite a bit different teaching these adults who are on such different levels, rather than teaching kids on a specific grade level (since you have a general idea of where they need to be), but still an idea for those of you who don't feel comfortable in your own classes. It's a very laid back environment and you would be able to teach a lesson on whatever you want.

  8. Just so everyone knows, the time limit for you tube videos is 10 minutes. I downloaded windows movie maker for free, which allows you to segment your video.

Also, YouTube does require some processing time, once the video is uploaded, so you should probably upload well in advance of the deadline.

(Found all this out the hard way today).

  9. Thank you Sarah and Meredith. I'm sure the rest will find this info useful!

  10. I can't seem to get YouTube to email the videos. It says "please add at least one recipient," no matter what I do...I even tried emailing one person at a time. Any ideas?

  11. I was able to do a great lesson on Tuesday that had a lot to do with multiculturalism. I didn't have a chance to video tape myself, but I am wondering if it would be acceptable if I uploaded a video of all of the content (the story, discussion and activity) that I did in the classroom with the students. It was a great activity and we had a lot of ideas and participation, but I was unable to get it on tape.

  12. can you re create it with pretend students?

  13. Michaela,
I am feeling the same apprehension. I spoke with my consulting teacher with whom I am observing and she was NOT comfortable with the guidlines for this course. In turn, I felt extremely uncomfortable; she has been very kind and cooperative in regards to observing and I didnt want to over step my boundaries. I am officially worried....what should I do?

  14. Someone mentioned using windows media maker to segment the video. Can you just take some of the beginning and end off with this? So that I am under the 10 minute limit, I wanted to take out parts throughout the recording. Does anyone know if this is possible? or how I would do it?

  15. Hi Suzi,

You may do a quick YouTube search for tutorials. Click here to find a list of FREE editors that may give you other tools to edit.

  16. Just an idea for people...Nelson mentioned recreating a lesson with pretend students. During my lesson I asked my teacher, and Jodi who was also observing the same class as me, to participate as well because only one student was present in the class that day. Why don't you focus on how you are teaching the lesson and your activities and have your freinds be the students? If they wouldn't know what to ask, give them some ideas of questions to ask throughout. I don't think the intent of the project was really for us to see the students, but more so the planning and delivery of the lessons. I could be off, but just wanted to offer an idea.

  17. I need major help with setting up Youtube!
I don't have my video yet so I'm not trying to upload anything. I don't understand how to set it up so that I'm part of the private group and I can see everyone's videos. Someone said to go on and accept people's friend requests, but I don't have any. The email thats linked to Youtube is the same one that Nelson has for our emails.

    PLEASE HELP ME! Thanks guys!

  18. Whoops my email through youtube is my real email and not my binghamton one...

  19. I sent an email earlier with instructions... It's also below:

    Hola:

Please re-read the info about your projects outlined in your syllabus.

For YouTube: watch this instructional video on how-to upload videos on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O7iUiftbKU

Make sure that you set the settings to PRIVATE.

Then, enter the addresses of everyone Cc'd in this email so that we all have access to it. We will be commenting and rating your video!

    Questions/Ideas? Post in the blog!

  20. Does anyone know the due date for the final project? I don't see one on the syllabus.

  21. scroll down... the last item at the bottom of the page http://www.quia.com/files/quia/users/lopeznj/ELED-513.pdf

  22. I am part of the youtube group, however when I try to click on people's videos to watch them, the videos do not appear. I am wondering if this is because people posted them as private and I do not have access? I can see both of Nelson's videos and my own. I decided to just keep mine available to everyone, so as to hopefully not run into this problem. Any one have some help or ideas for me? Thanks!

  23. Meredith... I think the problem is (atleast it was for my video) we put our video in a "private setting". I changed my video to public and I hope you are now able to view it (it is the video about igloos-- its titled Lesson for ELED513).

So, unless everyone knows how to invite us to view your videos (which i did not which is why i switched the setting to public), I think you might need to switch your settings to public.

    hope this helps
meredith-- let me know if you can view my video.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, I was wondering the same thing.. If we are friends with Nelson.. then we just look at his "friends" and their videos correct? How do we go about seeing these videos without "befriending" everyone? Just set them to public?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, that worked Kathryn. I can now see your video. I think setting them to public is the best option for everyone to see them! I will watch the whole thing and comment tomorrow! Can't wait to learn more about igloos :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Is everyone able to see my video?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am still having trouble viewing people's videos, have people changed the settings from private to public? Can anyone view all of the videos that are currently on youtube?

    ReplyDelete
  28. How do you upload your video to the group? I have mine uploaded to my account and set on public. I have been trying to figure out how to add it to the group. Can anyone help me out with this?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nelson, you wanted a lesson plan to go along with the video-was that due today also or by Friday?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Also, my video is set to private, so I think you need to add me as a friend in order to view it. I am in the group, but I can't figure out the URL of my video in order to post it....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lesson plan: today... anytime, so that I am able to follow along.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If your video is set to private, even if I am your friend, I cannot view it. I don't know how to fix this. If people just make their videos public for today and tomorrow and then erase them or then change them to private does that work for people? I doubt many people, if any, other than in the group will find it to watch during that short period of time.\

I've enjoyed watching the videos so far and would like to watch everyone's if possible. I've learned a lot of great ideas.

Jodi, I still can't see your lesson :(

Are lesson plans required? I made one, but it wasn't very formal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I sent friend requests out to everyone in the group. Once you add me as a friend I will make my video viewable to you. I see that that's working for people now.

Also, I cannot view Kathryn's final project on the Google apps website. Whenever I click the link and try to sign in, none of my login information works. I am signed into Google right now, but when I click the link it asks me to sign in again and my pods username/password, or anything else I attempt, does not work. Is this where everyone will be posting their final projects?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kathryn chose this way... you may have other tools.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Annette, I didn't think you had to sign in to view... maybe try to type in the url instead of clicking on it??

    ReplyDelete
  36. When do all the Youtube ratings/comments need to be completed by?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just a reminder that I requested everyone in the ELED group as a friend, in order to rate my video you will need to add me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Is there a way to check how many/which videos we have rated from the group...want to make sure I get them all...

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was also unable to view Kathryn's final lesson plan ideas or whatever. The link keeps bringing me to BU as well. Very frustrating. I was also curious where to go to make sure I don't accidentally miss a video to rate. Where are people putting their final projects (interviews)?

    ReplyDelete
  40. VERY weird... Kathryn suggested

maybe try to type in the url instead of clicking on it??

    ReplyDelete
  41. Even after I add the people who posted their videos as private to my friends, I am unable to view their videos, Any ideas?

Also, should we be uploading our final projects (documentaries) to this same group on Youtube?

    ReplyDelete
  42. typing it doesn't work...can we copy our projects to a cd and leave it in SOE for you (do you have a mailbox there?) or does it have to be posted somewhere online? Mine will be over 10 minutes so I don't want to post it on youtube.

Also, how can we check already rated videos (questions from above)?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't know the actual answer to your question, Michaela. But, that's my plan as well, to post my documentary to the same group. Then, everyone can see it if they want to.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He said we can post our videos somewhere (doesn't have to by youtube) or give them to him. Mine will be more than 10 minutes so I'm copying it to a CD and dropping it off to his office.

  45. sites.google.com/site/eled513

    is this what you typed?
if not, try it. It is my final project website and I have tried it on other computers and my website comes right up

  46. I reset my password for googleapps and it worked-nice job with your project!
