Here's a summary of today's meeting:
1. Watch the videos and comment on them tonight. If you have not watched those movies and have time to relax... I recommend them!
2. Tuesday: read and comment on Top 10 Questions...
3. Read Krashen (the whole thing) and take quiz... no VT for Krashen.
4. Read updated syllabus...
Alright... we can use this blog for questions/answers. Let's make it participatory, if you can answer someone's question, do it!

ReplyDeleteHi Nelson, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right area, but I'm having trouble opening the spreadsheet with our assigned chapters. I had entered my original choices in that first spreadsheet you emailed us...I just wanted to verify with you that those are still the chapters I'm supposed to read? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYour original choices remain the same... try opening the worksheet again from Quia.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the answer to this question from last nights meeting. How are we supposed to get someone to sign each observation and get that paper to you? I have a fax at my school I could use but I do not have a scanner?
ReplyDeleteHold on to them. All signed sheets should be turned in to me by the end of the course.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to read the third assignment. (Teaching Young Children in Multicultural Classrooms. I can not view the chapters I need to read. I am supposed to read Chapters 4 and 5. I am only able to view Chapter 1 and part of Chapter 2. Am I doing something wrong?
ReplyDeleteRe open it in another browser...
ReplyDeleteO.K. I went from using Internet Explorer to FireFox and it worked for most of chapter 4. When I go to view chapter five it says "You have either reached a page that is unavaliable for viewing or reached your viewing limit for this book" I Can not see any of chapter 5. I am not sure what to do.
ReplyDeleteLike Kathryn, I am having trouble reading my chapter (8) in Teaching Young Children...
ReplyDeleteI am trying to read it through Internet Explorer but it is not viewable. Any suggestions?
O.K. So I was using my laptop last night and I really think that I reached the viewing limit for the book like it said because when I came to school today I was able to view the chapters on their computer. So I guess I just need to read faster??
ReplyDeleteAmy, do you have FireFox... thats what I had to use to view the chapters.
I can not read past chapter 2 in the Teaching Children. It also says I reached the viewing limit. I don't have FireFox any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteGet Firefox! It's free... http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html
ReplyDeleteWant more? See a bunch here http://www.free-web-browsers.com/
Nelson,
ReplyDeleteWhat do I do when it tells me that I have reached my viewing limit for the book?
Kathryn
same thing is fixed when you use a different browser... or use a different computer... or try back at a later time. OR if none of this works, go to the library and check out the book.
ReplyDeleteAre all of these books available in the campus library? It seems that I am going to have the "page limit" problem for most of my readings and I think it's too late to order the books and get them in time.
ReplyDeletedid you try a different browser? that's what others are doing. Any other suggestions anyone?
ReplyDeleteI have three different browsers and when I go on each, I get a few different pages, but still not enough to do my readings. I still haven't even seen Ch 5 for the first book...not sure what to do.
ReplyDeleteI tried opening it with Firefox and it did not work. I guess the only thing I can do is try the library later. Did anyone have any luck opening their stuff?
ReplyDeleteThe best web browser is by far internet explorer, but even that isn't the best. I have now been using 4 different browsers and still some of the pages are missing...let me know how the library works out for you, please.
ReplyDeletePages will always be missing... for everyone. After all, the books are free. You will present your chapter on what's available.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when the next voice thread will be opened? I will have limited access to my computer on Sunday when our next voice threads are due, and I was hoping to post mine ahead of time, so I only had to be online to reply to others. Thanks for the help!
ReplyDeletePersonally Firefox has worked the best for me. The third assignment I had difficulty viewing the pages and could only view them in Firefox, but so far the 4th reading I have had no problems and am able to view it in Internet Explorer!
ReplyDeleteQuestion about the quizzes- There are short answer q's that say "instructor approval pending." How will we know our scores on the quizzes, so that we know if we want to retake them?
ReplyDeleteIf you feel confident about the answer, then you'll do fine. If you are not sure, take it again and maybe the computer will skip that question for you.
ReplyDeleteHey everybody,
ReplyDeleteAlthough a little late now, but still might be useful:

This link provides more information on the Krashen reading, highlighting important concepts/hypotheses.
Hi Nelson,
ReplyDeleteWhich quiz expires on Sunday? I thought weekly quizzes will expire on Saturday, and if it is the quiz on multicultural classrooms, how will that work if we do not hear everybody's chapter until it is posted? (Aren't we only supposed to read our chapter and present it, and use everybody else's chapter summaries to answer the quizzes?)...maybe I'm confused about this...

ANSWER
---------------
The third one. Yes, read and present your chapter THEN comment on others. Quizzes are based on the assigned readings in "yellow" in the reading sheet.
hey everyone... We are supposed to turn in our journal observations in APA format. Can anyone give me a refresher on what this means??
ReplyDeleteHi Nelson.
ReplyDeleteI just went to voicethread to report my summary and opinions on my chapter of Diversity Training for Classroom Teaching and you told us to describe our backgrounds and tell about a time where we felt out of place. Do you want us to answer your questions and to the summary or just answer your questions? Is it going to be this way for the rest of our assignments? You will tell us what to talk about?
Keep in mind that your VT assignment is:
ReplyDelete1. To read your chapter and present it (not read it)
2. To make two other comments on somebody
else's presentation or comments (replying to my
post counts as one)
Do we need to have a specific form to record our observations on or do we just list them on a piece of paper and have the teacher sign off on each of the visits?
ReplyDeletegood question... let me ask Tami.
ReplyDeleteHow is a journal supposed to be in APA format? Isn't it just your opinions...you aren't sighting anyone, correct?
ReplyDeleteAPA format is not just about citing... format also deals with margin, spacing, etc. Check out the link on Quia. Remember that you WRITE on your journal your personal/private thoughts. When you are ready to turn it in you EDIT it.
ReplyDeleteAnother solution for the "limited view" in Google Books: look it up on Amazon and click on the "look inside" and look around. You can also get results there by clicking on "surprise me"
ReplyDeleteWas anyone able to view Appendix D at all? I tried different computers, browsers, the works - and I couldn't read it at all. Nelson just holler at me if I'm way out of line here - but there was a question on the quiz about interpreting Appendix D. Would anyone be willing to give me a quick summary of the activity that was outlined in it?
ReplyDeleteAppendix D is available... see if this helps http://books.google.com/books?id=oBmDpEU8Q1MC&lpg=PT284&dq=3.%09Teaching%20Young%20Children%20in%20Multicultural%20Classrooms%3A%20Issues%2C%20Concepts%2C%20and%20Strategies%20by%20Wilma%20Robles%20de%20Melendez%2C%20Vesna%20Beck.&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
ReplyDeleteThere's a question on the 3rd quiz that I was wondering if you could give me some more information on. It says "The first known professional teacher..." Without giving the answer, can you let me know approximately what you're looking for? A specific name? A description? I'm having a difficult time seeing the pages in the book, so I don't know if I have that information available to me. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI can only see the first two pages of appendix c =(
ReplyDeleteWhat time does the third quiz expire on Sunday?
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that there is a lesson plan format on the quia class site under useful links. Are we supposed to hand in a lesson plan with our lesson with sheltered instruction? Or are we supposed to just have the you tube video?
ReplyDeleteKathryn I believe that in our initial meeting Nelson said that no formal written lesson plan needs to be turned in.
ReplyDeleteThe lesson plan is the formality SOE teachers use... not required for a grade, I'd be nice for me to follow your activity.
ReplyDeleteI am also having trouble opening Appendix D and finding the first professional teacher answer. Has anyone found what page it is on?
ReplyDeleteI am also having trouble opening Appendix D and finding the first professional teacher answer. Has anyone found what page it is on?
ReplyDeleteI could not access appendix d either. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteI will send an email with an attachment shortly.
ReplyDeleteHow soon after we take a quiz will the short-answer questions be graded?
ReplyDeletewithin the day
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible for us to receive a discussion post grade or feedback at the end of the week, so we could know how we are doing by that point in this aspect of the course?
ReplyDeleteI thought we needed to complete 5 class periods of observation, but the fieldwork log you emailed us says "5 hours" on it. I asked during our first meeting (on campus) if we observed 5 school periods (or lessons for elementary grades) that were less than an hour (some pull-outs are 30 min./45 min.) if that would be okay. Has this changed and do we now need to complete 5 full hours of observation?
ReplyDelete5 class hours is fine.
ReplyDeleteWill the "curriculum, culture and teaching" quiz expire this Sunday?
ReplyDeleteWould that discussion post feedback (from 3 comments ago) be possible?
ReplyDeleteFor the Six Principles reading I was assigned chapter 7. Google books does not offer any of that chapter and I could only get two pages from Amazon. Where else can I try?
ReplyDeleteGrade Feedback on VT: If you present your chapter and post 1 other comment you get the full credit... I'm not grading for mistakes, just insightful participation.
ReplyDelete---
Got two pages from Amazon? Present those! (sometimes when you click on "surprise me" you get your pages)
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteHere's something that worked for me, and it's worth trying out if you get stuck. If you type the title of a chapter or the author in a google search, sometimes you can find articles by the same (or almost same) title, where the author has previously published the chapter in a journal or something. Helps out with the google books/missing pages frustration. Check it out.
For the SAGE reading, it has all of us reading the "Introductory Essay." There is an introductory essay at the start of each chapter. Do we just read the first one? Just wanted to clarify. Thanks
ReplyDeleteIs the "curriculum, culture, and teaching" quiz expiring on Sunday?
ReplyDeleteAll quizzes for this week will expire 24 hours after the due date
ReplyDeleteWhat is the due date?
ReplyDeleteFor YouTube? Jan 19.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the due date for the quizzes? The above said the quizzes expire 24 hours after the due date?
ReplyDeleteIs there a cut off time for the 19th for turning in the YouTube lesson plan? The soonest I can do my lesson in the school is Tuesday afternoon, so I'd be posting it the evening of the 19th.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not an avid YouTube user. Will you give us instructions on how to post the videos under our class section?
Midnight is the cutoff for all work... the sooner, the better.
ReplyDeleteFor the SAGE reading, it has all of us reading the "Introductory Essay." There is an introductory essay at the start of each chapter. Do we just read the first one? Just wanted to clarify. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYes, just the intro for the first part.
ReplyDelete1) Do you want us to include field notes in the journal (so a field notes part and then a reflection for each day to go along with the notes for that day)?
ReplyDeleteField notes are good idea if you feel they are relevant to your journal reflections.
ReplyDeleteIt says for January 20th for our assignments that there will be a quiz. I am assuming it is on the SDAIE and SIOP readings. Is this quiz going to be available early like all of the other ones have? I'm trying to make a timeline so I get all my work done early, but wanted to see when it would be opened. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your ideas, Meredith. There is no quiz that day...
ReplyDeleteFor tonight, January 17th, I am unable to read my assigned chapter because it says I have timed out my reading. I have been waiting seven hours, and it still will not let me read chapter 12. I have tried 1) different computers and 2) trying to run my connection through a proxy. I am on the university's internet.
